That time of the week look towards what’s new on TV and shows I would recommend for the upcoming week. It goes to say the World Cup is not getting a mention because it is all over the place and hard to miss.
My top watch you need to look towards Wednesday and “Picnic at Hanging Rock”. I love the film – I will review both next week – I hope the series is just as good.
Sunday – Sky One – SWAT 9pm ***New Series***
Newly promoted SWAT leader Daniel `Hondo' Harrelson has to deal with the aftermath of the accidental shooting of a black teenager by a white police officer. More cop TV we do tend to see a lot produced and very say me. The new crime drama offering is based on the 1970s TV series, and starring Shemar Moore.
Monday – BBC1 – Who Do You Thing You Are? 9pm/BBC Wales 10:40pm ***New Series***
Actress Olivia Colman finds some surprises in her ancestral history, and her belief that most of those in her family tree emanate from Norfolk turns out to be far from the truth. Olivia is astonished to discover that she needs to travel to India to find out more about her great-great-great grandmother Harriot, who was an orphan in 1811 on a ship bound for England from Calcutta.
Harriot's father was an Englishman, but the identity of her mother, who gave birth to her in a remote Indian village, is a mystery Olivia delights in solving.
Monday – Sky Atlantic – Sharp Objects 9pm ***New Series***
Alcoholic journalist, Camille Preaker (Amy Adams), who returns from the big city to her small home town of Wind Gap to write a piece on the murder of two girls. But she soon comes up against the very reasons she left, not least her own mother, the volatile Adora. It is twisted and devious, and looks quite compelling.
Monday - PBS America – Yosemite 9pm ***New***
British viewers used to the thumping drama of Planet Earth might find American nature documentaries a touch sedate, with a tendency to indulge in laughably cod-poetic narration. This one-off about Yosemite National Park in California ticks all the boxes — despite the number of predators there is barely a sign of a chase, while narrator Kevin Kline seriously intones that white- water kayakers are out to “connect with nature in its purest liquid form”.
But the grandeur of the park’s monumental rock formations, waterfalls, speaks for itself, while hearing from adventurers drawn to the towering peaks adds another fascinating dimension. Scientists and adventurers explore the US national park through the water that carved out its valleys and feeds it flora and fauna, investigating the effects of climate change.
Wednesday – BBC2 – Picnic at Hanging Rock 9:05pm ***New Series***
A six-part reimagining of Joan Lindsay's 1967 mystery novel. Mysterious widow Hester Appleyard purchases an isolated mansion out in the Australian bush to transform into a school for young ladies, and six years later, Appleyard College is a success. When students and staff go for a Valentine's Day picnic to Hanging Rock in 1900, three of the school's star students and a teacher mysteriously vanishes.
Thursday – BBC1 – Eat Well For Less 8pm ***New Series***
Gregg Wallace and Chris Bavin help the Atkinson family from Blackpool lower their food bill. Michelle and John lives with Gary (22), Liam (19), and Kyle (7), and despite working 50 hours a week, feeding the family has fallen to mum Michelle.
However, the two oldest lads earn their own money and prefer to buy takeaways - despite having a fridge full of food. Can the presenters, with the help of nutritionist Priya Tew, get the family to cut down on the fast food and help work together more at mealtimes?
Friday – Channel 4 – 8 out of 10 cats does Countdown 9pm ***New Series***
Regulars including hitherto perennial host Jimmy Carr are nudged to one side as Canadian comedian Katherine Ryan hosts an all-female edition of the words-and-numbers quiz, inviting Roisin Conaty and Jessica Hynes to take on Sara Pascoe and Lolly Adefope, as part of a celebration of 100 years of women's suffrage.
As usual, Rachel Riley is at the letters and numbers board, while Morgana Robinson appears in character as EastEnders' Natalie Cassidy alongside wordsmith Susie Dent in Dictionary Corner.
