Stonehearst Asylum (2014) - Film Review

Just before going to bed last night I spied a film due on and the title caught my eye ‘Stonehearst Asylum’ and a quick look at the film information, Kate Beckinsale starring so I had to set record on my virgin box.

Hands up I lust after Kate Beckinsale, she is beautiful and having a ‘Crush Sunday’ maybe I should have a ‘Lust Thursday’ but it sounds all wrong so I will stick with my crushes. I am sure she will be appearing in my blog somewhere in other posts.

So to the film, I watched it this morning and it was a splendid watch. Set at the turn of the 20th Century the focus is the Stonehearst Asylum; it seems on first glance an interesting social experiment is afoot.

The Doctors almost modern treatment seems to be working at first, its certainly more positive than the barbaric Victorian treatment of the insane and infirm that was obviously the norm. The film then turns on its head and it all starts unravelling – not to say too much more there are further twists, you want the hero to prevail, but you also feel for the patients. It all climaxes to an acceptable conclusion. All very Hollywood but still acceptable.

This movie made from a short story by Edgar Allan Poe a mysterious and a fascinating story about the secrets of the human mind but at the same time mixes a little spooky atmosphere and spooky stories of patients in the asylum.

I was fascinated with the film and it is always a pleasure to see Kate Beckinsale in a drama. Ben Kingsley is awesome as usual as like some of the others Michael Caine and David Thewlis.

It is a true call - the lunatics have taken over the asylum

After being told I give to many spoilers, I hope this is better.
