Must see TV - Week beginning Saturday 9 February 2019

Well TV is picking up and “The Walking Dead” is back after a break but can it survive without Rick is the big question. Last week “Das Boot” turned out to be a gem as I was entertained which is all I ask from a TV show. I love an award show and the Bafta (film), John Torode, and Gregg Wallace are back on our screens with the return of “MasterChef”. I can’t figure out why I like cooking shows being a fussy eater.

Saturday – BBC 2 – David Bowie: Finding Fame 9pm (New)

The final part of Francis Whately's trilogy of films on Bowie's life, telling the story of the five years when many of the ideas that would help him become an icon were first born. Starting in 1966, soon after David Jones changed his name to David Bowie, the film traces his interest in everything from Holst, Pinky, and Perky to Anthony Newley, Tibetan Buddhism. How he used all of these influences to create not only Ziggy Stardust, but also the material for his entire career.

Sunday – BBC 1 – The Bafta Film Awards 9pm (New)

Unlike the Oscars the Bafta’s have a host Joanna Lumley fronting the award ceremony from the Royal Albert Hall. Films in the running for awards this year include The Favourite, with nominations in 12 different categories, as well as Bohemian Rhapsody, First Man, Roma, A Star Is Born, Black Klansman, Vice, Green Book, Cold War, Can You Ever Forgive Me? , Mary Poppins Returns, Mary Queen Of Scots and Stan & Ollie. Featuring a performance from Cirque du Soleil.

Monday – BBC 1 - The Empty Housing Scandal 9:15 am (New Series)

Matt Allwright reports on ideas and initiatives to address the current housing crisis using some of the 200,000 domestic properties that lie empty around the UK. He begins by investigating a house in south London that has been unoccupied for more than 10 years, while in Liverpool, he meets a team bringing hundreds of derelict properties back to life after decades of decline.

Monday – BBC1 – MasterChef 9pm (New Series)

John Torode and Gregg Wallace host the cookery competition, as a new batch of contestants are put through gruelling culinary challenges to test not just their skills, but also their knowledge of food and ability to cope in a professional kitchen. The first seven hopefuls need to make every effort to impress to prove to John and Gregg that they have the potential to rise above the rest and become MasterChef 2019 Champion.

Monday – Channel 4 – Famous And Fighting Crime 9pm (New Series)

TV presenter and model Katie Piper, Loose Women panellist Penny Lancaster, Made in Chelsea's Jamie Laing, Gogglebox's Sandi Bogle, and comedian Marcus Brigstocke volunteer as special constables with Cambridgeshire police force. In the first edition, the gruelling first-day training forces Penny to confront demons from her past and serves as a rude awakening to everyone else of the dangers they're about to face. She as to chase a shoplifter who threatens to stab her.

Monday – Fox – The Walking Dead 9pm (New Series)

The communities thought they could build a better future separately, but the recent loss of one of their own drives them to band together. New leaders rise when a disturbing and dangerous threat is unmasked. An escaped captive revisits his past. What with the Whisperers! What can we expect from them they are not your normal walking dead,

Tuesday – BBC 1 Wales – Pitching In 9pm (New Series)

Heart-warming drama about a recent widower running a business in a picturesque village with a tight- knit community in north Wales. A birthday party thrown by the tight-knit community of Glan Mor to celebrate his 71st birthday surprises the series of six opens with recent widower Frank Hardcastle. Two of the stars of the BBC hit Gavin and Stacey will be reunited. Larry Lamb and Melanie Walters previously played Michael Shipman and Gwen West in the popular comedy.

Wednesday – Channel 4 – Skint Britain: Friends Without Benefits 9pm (New Series)

Following the residents of North East town of Hartlepool, as they became guinea pigs for the rollout of Universal Credit, and the shocking events that followed. Far away from the Westminster bubble, the stark realities of the tougher new system's impact on people's lives come sharply into focus. The programme follows unemployed Nathan and Abbey, as they take their dog out to hunt for rabbits to cook, and partially-blind David, who has had his benefit payments reduced, meaning he has just £5 to live off for the entire month.

Thursday – Channel 5 – They Lend It, You Spend it: The Loan Shop 9pm (New Series)

Part one of two. Documentary following the work of Community First Credit Union based in South Yorkshire, as it deals with loan applications from people who desperately need cash. Doncaster branch manager Cheryl meets bride-to-be Kerry, who needs help to pay for her wedding, having brought the ceremony forward when her mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
