Both the FA Cup and the Welsh Cup had fixtures on the weekend. It was First Round Proper for the FA Cup and Round 2 here in Wales. Over the border in England, my team at this moment was Truro City who faced League 1 opposition in Charlton in London and in Wales, my team Pencoed Athletic had a home game against Pontypridd Town.
Truro made the long trip to Charlton with underdog written all over them against league opposition but I have my fingers crossed before kick-off. Truro were making their debut in the first round after becoming the first Cornish side to reach this stage of the competition since 1969, when Falmouth Town were beaten by Peterborough.
Many of the match reports are all full of praise for the National League South part-timers and their maiden journey into the First Round Proper. Nearly a thousand fans made their way from Cornwall to Charlton in hope of a giant killing but not this time. Charlton of Division One took an early lead but failed to add to their lead before half time. After the restart they did score extending their lead but the visitors hit back could a replay be on the cards must have been the thought of the fans. It was not to be as Charlton opened the lead further with another goal and that was game over final score 3-1 to the league club.
FA Cup Welsh watch was back with Newport in this round with a home game against Walsall. Newport are in the hat for the draw tonight on BBC 2 live 7pm after a 2-1 win.

In the Welsh Cup, I was relying on Pencoed Athletic beating Pontypridd Town but it was not on the cards. Pencoed were down to ten men after only 35minutes and at half time were 2-1 down so not surprised the final score was 3-1 to the visitors.
In the Third Round Ponty have a home fixture with Haverfordwest County currently top of the Welsh League Division One in what could be a tough game for the home team.
Well the Cardiff watch is all but over when Bridgend Street were well batter by Cwmamman United 3 - 0 and STM Sports also coming a cropper losing 2-1 to lowly Penydarren Boys & Girls FC so leaving the only Cardiff team left in the draw will be Cardiff Met who enter the Round 3.
Cardiff Met are the highest placed Cardiff based team in the Welsh football structure playing in the Welsh Premier League and are currently second in the league and the best chance for a Cardiff based team winning of the Cup in years. But to progress they we need to overcome a trip to Penybont.
