With the wife on a little trip to Penarth, I gave her an order to seek out and find a new pie for me to sample being a dutiful partner she returned pie in hand. Unwrapping the pie it was an impressive looking ‘Steak Pie’ made in-store at David Lush Butchers. Pricey but luckily the wife rolled up on discount Wednesday. We would have to see if it was worth it.
It was a good-looking pie with a nice colour to the pastry and I couldn’t wait to get tucked in. It only needed warming in the oven, which is one of the big advantages of already cooked pies. I never use a microwave to warm up a pie. You can lose some of the crispness and firmness sticking a pie in one of them.
Coming in a foil tray, which I soon discarded and cutting through the pie I could see this was the ‘ultimate steak pie’, a real bad boy. It was what I was expecting from a homemade pie from the butchers. Filled with quality meat from top to bottom it felt solid, weighty, and dense I could have used it for a doorstop. There was a great steak, gravy ratio and the pastry was tasty and not soggy, I hate soggy pastry.
It is a taste sensation - everything about this pie was excellent. The steak was chunky and looked like they were of the tenderness of cuts and not overly chewy. The thick gravy immediately oozes out as if a dam had burst. Pity the wife didn’t buy herself one because I would have eaten hers as well. I would highly recommend you pay visit to the shop if you are anywhere and check it out.
Rate this Pie 10/10
