Another quiet week on TV but a bit of sadness with the finale of The Walking Dead on Monday I have my fingers crossed for a blood bath ending. Its loss from my TV schedule will be lessened by series four of the Fear of the Walking Dead what you could call a rip-off of the Walking Dead. TV is having a slow time of it even on Netflix’s which magically returned a few days ago someone other than me must have paid the bill.
Sunday – BBC 2 – Britain’s Biggest Warship 8pm ***New Series***
HMS Queen Elizabeth, the most advanced warship yet built in Britain. We’re promised an in-depth look at the ultra-modern aircraft carrier as ship and crew are put through their paces during sea trials.
The filmmaker captures an intimate and personal portrait of life on board ultra-modern super aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, as its crew learns the intricacies of a warship that will change the way Britain goes to war. In this first instalment, early 2016 sees sailors begin to arrive in Rosyth dockyard in Scotland where the ship is still in construction, but nearing completion. Captain Jerry Kyd and his 700 sailors are assembling to take the prototype warship to sea for the first time. These trials herald what should be 50 years of service.
Sunday – Iffy Internet stream - Fear of the Walking Dead ***New Series***
It can be viewed on AMC via BT but I have to settle for an illegal internet stream if I can find one but it with still keep the zombie count going. I would think very few have seen the show but initially set in Los Angeles, California and then later in Mexico before returning over the border.
The series follows a dysfunctional group, led by former high school guidance counselor Madison Clark, her daughter Alicia, her drug addict son Nick, she lost her husband at the beginning of series three. Others of their group have suffered losses as well but it is different than The Walking Dead to make it interesting.
Monday – ITV – The Queen’s Green Plant 9pm ***New ***
A documentary following Her Majesty the Queen and an ambitious legacy project to create a global network of protected forests, spanning the 53 countries of the Commonwealth. The film also features a conversation between the Queen and Sir David Attenborough in the gardens of Buckingham Palace last summer, with the subjects ranging from climate change to conkers and birthday gifts. There is also footage of the members of the royal family involved so far in making the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy a reality, including Prince Harry planting trees in the Caribbean and Prince William in Canada's Great Bear Rainforest.
Tuesday – BBC 2 – Top of the Shop with Tom Kerridge 8pm ***New Series***
Turning homemade food into a successful business is tough. There’s so much more to it than simply having a cracking product as four-artisan food producers discover when they set up their stalls in a Yorkshire Dales farm shop. They must impress restaurateur Nisha Katona and School of Artisan Food founder Alison Swan Parente as well as make customers part with their money. Tom Kerridge, of course, is encouragement personified.
Tuesday - Fox – The Legion 9pm ***New Series***
This trippy, mind-bending drama from the creator of Fargo was the most original take on the superhero genre yet when it debuted last year, with Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens starring as a powerful telepath tortured by the strain of his abilities.
Now, though, Stevens’s David Haller has been “cured” of his mental issues after expelling the evil Shadow King from his subconscious.
But if you thought that meant the series would get less weird, the contents of this episode – including a man wearing a wicker basket on his head at all times, a nightclub dance-off between David and strange spiritual entities and a sex scene on the astral plane – will soon assure you that Legion is just getting started.
Wednesday – Sky Atlantic – Occupied 9pm ***New Series***
At the end of the last series, the Americans were attempting to remove Jasper Berg (Henrik Mestad) from their embassy. The Norwegian political thriller returns and six months have passed and, as Russia maintains its grip on Norway, an exile government is being formed. After the first showing in 2016, there were reports that the Kremlin were displeased by its depiction of a Russian occupation of Norway, condemning it as being “in the worst traditions of the cold war”.
Friday – BBC 1 – Home from Home 9:30 ***New Series***
It's the first day of the new season and Neil Hackett and family are excited to be back at the Lake District site. However, on arrival, Neil is perplexed to receive an oddly worded text from his boss, assuming its contents mean he has been fired. To make matters worse, it transpires that site manager Thistlethwaite has plans to put a brand new wi-fi mast right outside the clan's front window. Neil trashes the mast and to frustrate its instant re-erection steps into the concrete - only to find himself trapped.
