Saturn 3 (1980) - Film Review

Not, the best sci-fi film ever made but a chance viewing of a picture of Farrah Fawcett in character (yes that’s pervy Pete at work) on a film I was watching I decided to review it. I couldn’t remember the last time I saw it but it must have been early eighties on video and maybe once on TV so it’s been hell of a while. It was a piece of luck that I found the full film on YouTube.

On the remote research station, Saturn 3 Major Adam (Kirk Douglas) and his younger assistant and lover Alex (Farrah Fawcett) lead a peaceful life. That is until they receive a visit from Benson (Harvey Keitel) who arrives from Earth with a brand new robot called Hector. Benson failed the mental test required to travel to Saturn 3 and kills his replacement, Captain James, taking his place in the mission. Soon as he arrives on Saturn 3, he immediately takes an interest in the beautiful Alex.

Hector learns information from a computer connection to Benson where he notices Benson’s lust for Alex and fancies his chances now he has taken on a life of his own and in doing so putting everyone on Saturn 3 at danger.

With Benson and Hector both lusting over the scantily clad Alex Benson tells her that on Earth, everyone is promiscuous. He explains everyone just enjoys each other sexually with no inhibitions hoping for some fun time with Alex himself. Hector kills Alex’s dog Sally.

In a confrontation over Alex, the older Adam gets the better of the young Benson Alex had to separate them. Hector drags Benson away after chopping his hand off. In the end Adam as to protect Alex from Hector.

But these elements work to create a simple but entertaining story which on one level is about the out of control robot Hector fancying Alex and going on a course of destruction as he tries to remove both Adam and Benson from his path. Yes that does mean we basically have a relentless robot storyline but with the added sexual element makes it a little entertaining.

On the subject of sex we also have, a further subplot as we learn that Alex has never been to Earth and really only knows life as Adam's partner. So when Benson arrives he tries to seduce and have his way with Alex and so we have this alpha male situation as we have the young Benson and the older Adam who tries to prove he is as fit as his young competition.

But the thing is that as a whole "Saturn 3" doesn't come together and ends up feeling like two actors competing whilst a third being treated like a blonde bimbo. I am serious because when it comes to Farrah Fawcett as Alex, when she isn't stripping off she is wearing something, which highlights her body and looks and her character has nothing clever to say or do, in fact her character is basically a dumb blonde.
