Welsh Cup kicks off

Last weekend it was the Road to Wembley and yesterday it was the turn of the Welsh Cup the lesser-known route to a Cup Final. Like last week, I have picked a team I intend to follow from a far all the way to the Final.

After perusing the starting line-up after the draw, I picked out Brecon Corries and I have no reason why. I would normally choose the team closest to my house in the lovely city of Cardiff that would have been Canton Liberals. Maybe I have some kind of fantasy about visiting Brecon.

So Brecon were playing Penrhiwfer in this opening round and I had no idea who or where was Penrhiwfer, so to google. Checked Wikipedia and it said, “There is one shop, one church, and one community centre”, sounds about right for one of the valley communities.

Brecon won the game 3-0 and will now progress in to the next round along with Cardiff teams AFC Butetown and Cardiff Corries neither will set the Welsh Cup alight in the latter stages of the cup. The last time a Cardiff team won the cup was back in 1999 when Inter CableTel won via penalties. It is also nice to see the competition now has a sponsor JD Sports.
