The Last Post - TV Review

Alison Laithwaite
I forgot to add ‘The Last Post’ to my weekly must see TV blog on the weekend I must have had a lapse of memory which is unusual for me. So I sat down and tucked into it for an hour looking to be entertained last night.

The opening shot is of passengers alighting a plane, on the plane is a newly married Officer, and is wife as he takes up a posting in Aden (now Yemen). The officer he is replacing is having one last shag with a fellow officer’s wife before he leaves Aden. Later we see he fails to make the airport he is killed on the way.

Aden is one of the last bastion of the British Empire but some of the locals take up arms to hurry their departure so a once comfortable posting was going to become lively. The lives of the military police and their families are the central characters from their base overlooking the town of Aden.

Captain Martin
Captain Joe Martin (Jeremy Neumark Jones) and his new bride Honor (Jessie Buckley) are the main characters leading the story. When they arrive at their quarters, they find Alison Laithwaite (Jessica Raine) the alcoholic unfaithful wife of a fellow officer, sprawled all over their bed, which was her former lover’s bed. She looks like she is going to be the instigator of a number of stories over the remaining five weeks along with the insurgents .

Her husband Lieutenant Ed Laithwaite (Stephen Campbell Moore), meanwhile, isn’t one of the boys and passed over for Captain Martin and he harbours an unfashionable desire to understand the Arabic-speaking locals and takes a softer approach to interrogation. He also knows about the affair but with no intimacy with his wife he will soon know, if he doesn’t, she is pregnant.

I can see Alison could soon be a problem for the new married couple it’s a case of can Honor try to keep her knickers on or like Alison will she be putting her bra on the washing line as a single to announce she is free. Her husband looks to have a plum up his ass full of army regulations he has already taken his new bride to task for removing her sunglasses in the presence of a lower rank.
