The mammoth transfer saga involving defender Gary Medel is over. Yesterday he finally signed on the dotted line and is now an Inter Milan player.
Like former Cardiff City player and sports columnists Nathan Blake the final fee baffles me. Cardiff paid £11m for the Chilean international who came to the club with a good reputation, which was enhanced during his season with the Bluebirds. On top of his season in Wales, he was also one of the stars of the World Cup in Brazil.
Therefore, a sale of £10m looks very much a bargain for the Italian club. I am not sure how much of the £10m will end up in the Cardiff City bank account. These days transfer deals can be complex with staggered payments.
If you factor in wages, Medel must have cost the club around £12m to £13m in total so at least you would expect to recoup your investment. If the defender had failed to impress while with the Bluebirds or at the World Cup, you would reasonably expect to take a loss but he has been a hit with pundits and commentators in a poor season for Cardiff.
Blake said, "If you negotiate and you're adamant that you're at least looking for £2m more than you paid for him or £3m more... whatever's happened between agent and managers and owners - how they've ended up at £10m after the World Cup, its crazy”.
That’s football for you some you win some you lose. It would have been interesting for the club to explain their reasoning behind this deal and why the low transfer fee but it’s unlikely to happen. It was obvious he wanted away once the club were open to offers. Would he have stayed if Cardiff were still in the Premiership, who knows and I don’t really care the future is now.
