After the disappointment of the international break and the heartbreak for Wales and Welsh football, it’s back to the week in week out struggles of league football. Tonight Cardiff City travel to Birmingham to resume their battle to stay at the top end of the Championship table.
Last season both teams played out two draws, 0-0 at Birmingham, and 1-1 at the Cardiff City Stadium. Cardiff go into this game as favourites but there’s that new manager syndrome to overcome where new managers tend to win they opening game. Cardiff are expected to be well supported at Birmingham always a popular fixture with the fans I expect more would have travelled if it was a Saturday afternoon kick-off.
Cardiff go into the game top of the table one point above Wolves so will be looking for a win to consolidate their position Birmingham on the contrary have had a bad start to the season and reside in the bottom three going into the game. Manager Harry Redknapp was sacked due to poor results and on their last outing, they lost 6-1 away at Hull. New boss Steve Cotterill watched the Hull game from the stand but will be in control fully for this game and may the awful start to the season continue.
The Cardiff boss Neil Warnock will have those home from international duty assessed and his hopeful midfielder Aron Gunnarsson will be fit after helping Iceland reach the World Cup. Warnock was unhappy before the international break that Gunnarsson reported for Iceland duty after missing Cardiff's previous two games with hip and thigh problems. Also, Gabon's Bruno Manga and Neil Etheridge are doubtful after late returns from international duty.
Birmingham City could welcome back record signing Jota for the Cardiff game, there is a possibility striker Che Adams, and utility man Jason Lowe may be available after hamstring problems.
The game is live on Sky for all the armchair City fans not making the trip always a bonus.
