I must say Cardiff town centre looked great all Christmassy decked out in decorations and there was a general buzz in and around in the town centre.
I love the Christmas Market with all the units selling all kinds of trinkets and craft ware. Although wandering through the St David Centre you get the Christmas feeling with the decorations, but it must be said I was unimpressed with the individual shop windows of many of the stores and shops.
But for the odd Christmas tree, Christmas wreaths, and garlands it is fake snow and cheap looking stick-on crap the word tacky comes to mind. When I was a child many moons ago shops of all sizes would take pride in decorating their windows. Children would stand in ore looking at what was there to see.
I fondly remember the David Morgan’s Christmas window display possible the best dressed window in Cardiff. One of the all-time highlights of my Christmas would be standing there with my face pressed against the window watching the train disappearing in and out of the toys on display. There would be a liberal use of meccano building sets, used to build the centrepiece of the display.
Something like a massive windmill, or tower something you could only dream of building but I would only get a small set. If you were lucky maybe, something you spied would find its way under your Christmas tree.
All the big stores had their window displays and even smaller shops putting today’s attempts to shame. I know things have to change but not for the worst. Maybe the council should step in with a best Christmas window display competition and I am sure it would increase footfall in the city centre.
