Earning Some Christmas Dosh

When I was  a kid, that was a long while ago at Christmas there was a guarantee top money gathering opportunity – carol singing. It was always a top earner with people willingly parting with their cash if you knocked the right door and we knew the doors to knock.

Where I lived was a very small area sandwich between the River Taff and the old Glamorganshire canal four streets and a bit I suppose.

It took little effort with the carol singing after weeks of free training in school brushing up a carol or two. For a successful venture it was always best to have a small tight group of like-minded money grabbers mainly because it meant less money to spread around the group. You would need a few good singers not to many mumblers.

Hitting the street first was always essential before any other savvy entrepreneurs hit the street themselves. First targets would be uncles, aunts, and cousins. Next the churchgoers! Always very generous more so if you when to their church  so a multi-religious group, it could help and soften the odd hard hearts. However, pensioners could be a tough bunch and somewhat tight not with a donation to our funds but you were unlike to get away with one verse of Good King Wenceslas or Jingle Bells they would want their monies worth if there was a second verse.

Today kids do not carol sing but for in stores/town centre's as a school group, parents are pained to lose sight of their children while ours were happy to let us out because everyone knew everyone.
