Bands Reunited - Up the Junction - Too Nice to Talk To

On the subject of music if you can call it music I was reminded of that awful ITV2's reality series The Big Reunion yesterday while listening to the radio. Some of the names mention sent a shiver down my spine with the crap of the quality on offer. The likes of Five and 911 who rocked their own backyards or more likely bedrooms.

The need to wash my brains out was great but I had the right medicine by remembering the VH1 show ‘Bands Reunited’ a real reality series if you need to pigeon hole the show. Bands the show tried to reunite were head and above those on the ITV2’s show. Many of which failed, but what a journey.

The format of the VH1 show was simple. The presenter Aamer Haleem, was documented attempting to put together a reunion of one band for a one off special concert in either London or Los Angeles. He would present the individual band members with one of their albums and ask them to put their signature confirming their participation, maybe.

Take Frankie Goes to Hollywood all the members agreed to reunite and met in some rehearsal studio, but Holly Johnson refused to perform. American new wave band Berlin had a full reunion including original drummer Rod Learned performing "The Metro" and "No More Words." for a select group of fans.

The two stand out bands the show tried to reunite that excited me were The (English) Beat and Squeeze. The plan was simple to get the original six members of The Beat together with the band members interviewed, those willing to talk on camera, usually focusing on the reasons of the breakup and friendships. After chasing around after the band only four of the band made it to the rehearsing studio, David Steele and Andy Cox refused to participate

With Squeeze even before the show aired, I knew they would never reunite the original band having read Jools Holland reaction when it was ever brought up in interviews. Nevertheless, I was still going to enjoy the journey.

Lead vocalist/guitarist Glenn Tilbrook seem to be in along with Chris Difford both looking to put to bed some demons. The other bandmates were hit or miss but it makes of great TV I just wished they would have just reformed for that one off gig but it was not to be.
