It is over the Bones' Series Finale aired last night and I was there watching has I was back in 2005 for the very first episode and all 244 others since. I have never tired of the Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel), Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) relationship, and the rest of the gang.
A brief outline of the show: Forensic anthropologist, Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan, and cocky FBI special agent Seeley Booth build a team to investigate murders - and quite often, there is not more to examine than rotten flesh or mere bones.
Series finales can be tricky, especially with shows that have been on the air for many years because fans expect a lot. There are always multiple story lines, characters, and loose ends that should be tied up before it is all over.
To do it in a way that satisfies everyone is almost impossible, but Bones Season 12 Episode 12 left me smiling and content. The explosion at the Jeffersonian gave us some great moments of drama and led Brennan to face one of the most challenging obstacles of her life.
While Angela and Brennan tried to figure out if Angela’s unborn child was safe, Booth was frantic to get Brennan some help. Being trapped led to some wonderfully dramatic moments between all four characters.
It was also a gratifying way for Hodgins to revisit his feelings about Booth being a sniper and showing how the work they do has given him a different perspective….
I also loved how Hodgins being a paranoid conspiracy theorist, something he readily admits to, helped Angela keep backup records safe at the Jeffersonian. But the biggest twist was Brennan suffering a contusion to her brain, which compromised her ability to process complex information.
That very question made Brennan look at everything in a new light and gave us some warm and heartfelt moments between Brennan and her team. When she showed up at Booth’s office, she was feeling vulnerable and lost. So much of her identity is in being Dr. Temperance Brennan. “For so much of my life my intelligence was all I had. I may not have had a family, but I understood things that nobody else could. My brain, the way I think, is who I am. Who I was.” She stated.
Having Brennan come along on the raid to take down the badie did not make a lot of sense. I know that they normally work as partners in the field, but this was a case where a SWAT team was more necessary than Brennan. It was obviously set up to allow Brennan to begin getting her cognitive function back when she needed it to save Booth, who in turn was able to kill the badie.
Aubrey was offered the same promotion as the position in Los Angeles, but this time in Washington D.C., and he decided to stay. I have always liked Aubrey and was happy to hear he would be staying with the team. Cam and Arastoo decide to adopt three brothers in foster care practically brought me to tears.
I felt happy for Hodgins named temporary Interim Director of the Lab in Cam’s absence celebrating the news spinning around in his wheelchair announcing he was no King of the Lab.
The final scene had Booth and Brennan walking off together complaining about their bad backs. But is that the end …. The writers have suggested revisiting the team in a few years for a catch-up, which as a fan I am happy with so maybe not the ending.
