Must see TV - Week beginning 15/04/2017 - My Choice

Bit of a quiet week TV wise for new content hence my weekly offering being somewhat film loaded this week. Last week I happened on a BBC3 offering Clique a psychological thriller spread over six one-hour episodes about a group of female University student’s where university fresher’s Holly and Georgia immersed themselves in student life - and the world of Professor Jude McDermid's Solasta Initiative.

Solasta Finance is the number one internship programme, which gives young women the chance to get their careers off to a flying start but at a cost, we are to learn. It is on the iPlayer for a while and if you have the chance, I would recommend it.

Saturday – BBC1 – Doctor Who 7:20pm

Doctor Who is back with the last run out of the present Doctor Peter Capaldi who will be regenerating at the end of the series and we will have a new Doctor! Could it be a woman this time? Has a fan I am up for the new Doctor being a woman. If it was to be actress Natalie Dormer well ok with me.

However, for now, the Doctor will be battling to save the earth and fight old enemies like the Daleks and some new. There will be a new companion, Pearl Mackie playing Bill who is gay, which is being played heavily in the press, the first gay companion. Also sharing the TARDIS is Matt Lucas, Nardole who we have seen before in a previous episode.

Sunday – Sky Cinema Premiere – Star Trek Beyond 8pm

The second outing of Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk. After stopping off at Starbase Yorktown, a remote outpost on the fringes of Federation space, the USS Enterprise, halfway into their five-year mission, is destroyed by an unstoppable wave of unknown aliens.

With the crew stranded on an unknown planet and with no apparent means of rescue, they find themselves fighting against a ruthless enemy with a well-earned hatred of the Federation and everything it stands for. Only a rebellious alien warrior can help them reunite and leave the planet to stop this deadly menace from beginning a possible galactic war.

Monday - Sky Cinema Premiere – The Shallows 8pm

In the taut thriller The Shallows, when Nancy (Blake Lively) is surfing on a secluded beach, she finds herself on the feeding ground of a great white shark. Though she is stranded only 200 yards from shore, survival proves to be the ultimate test of wills, requiring all of Nancy's ingenuity, resourcefulness, and fortitude.

Tuesday – History – Vikings 10pm

This hidden away on the History channel is such a waste it should be on the BBC giving it a bigger audience. Still I love it. Vikings is inspired by the sagas of Viking Ragnar Lothbrok, one of the best-known legendary Norse heroes and notorious scourge of England and France.

The show portrays Ragnar as a farmer who rises to fame by successful raids into England, and eventually becomes a Scandinavian king, with the support of his family and fellow warriors: his brother Rollo, his son Björn Ironside, and his wives—the shield maiden Lagertha and the princess Aslaug.
Wednesday – Flim4 – Riddick 9pm

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he has encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of mercenary, more lethal, and violent, while a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal captains the second. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters will not leave the planet without Riddick's head as their trophy.

Thursday – Channel 4 Box Set – GBH

Michael Murray is an ambitious and charismatic politician leader of a local council but not Liverpool or anything to do with Derek Hatton former leader of the Liverpool council. His nemesis Jim Nelson among others a much loved headmaster of a local school for disturbed children.

Friday – BBC2 – Versailles – 9:30pm

Versailles is back for its second series and will be back for a third, which is reported to be raunchier than ever as the selling point. There was some controversy with the first series caused by a number of racy sex scenes but that was not the only substance to the series.

There will be intrigue and all kinds of skulduggery with fresh challenges for the King and his court at Versailles, where the personal and the political are inextricably linked.
