Back in August, I perused the list of 102 entrants into the first Qualifying round of the Welsh Cup for a team to start my armchair supporting journey to the April final. I chose local Cardiff team Tiger Bay and I have a tradition when picking a team, I do have many traditions.
I always pick a Cardiff based team and it must be a home fixture to start with and I do not know why I have been doing this for over 30 years and the same for the FA Cup but the only differences is I just look at the list and just pick a name I fancy. I have a nerdy attitude to lists and football information and an avid reader of ground hopping websites/blogs.
In the end, 193 teams made their way to the final hoping of that appearance probably at Wrexham’s ground being an all North Wales final. So who made the final this year? Well has expected ‘The New Saints’ winners of the last three finals are there and may as well been given a bye to the final as they are nearly unbeatable in Welsh football.
As for my team into the semi-final, Caernarfon Town they were beaten 3-1 by Bala Town my new champions going in the final. Bala have failed to beat the Saints twice in the league this season. Nevertheless, this is a Cup Final and form could go out the window the winner secure a place in the UEFA Europa League. Bala have already secured a place in the Europa League first qualifying round and New Saints in the Champions League first qualifying round via league positions.
My route to the Final:
Final – Bala Town v The New Saints
Semi-Final - Caernarfon Town v Bala Town
Fifth Round - Llanfair United 0-7 Caernarfon Town
Fourth Round - Llanfair United 4-1 Cefn Druids
Third Round - Cefn Druids 2-0 Llantwit Major
Second Round - Llantwit Major 1 - 0 Llandrindod Wells
First Round - Sully Sports 2 - 6 Llantwit Major
Second Round Qualifying – Sully Sports FC 4-1 Tiger Bay
First Round Qualifying – Tiger Bay 2-1 Blaenavon Blues
