Loading the Jukebox – 8 Zombies The Cranberries

For me one of the most iconic tracks by the Cranberries along with “Linger”. Who can resist the rasping vocals of Dolores O’Riordan and the haunted entrance into the song? The song was written during the bands English Tour in 1993. It was a protest song about the “Troubles” infecting Northern Ireland and beyond.

It was written in memory of Jonathan Ball and Tim Parry two young boys killed by the IRA in 1993, Warrington. In the video of Zombies the band are filmed in a derelict building interwoven with Dolores O’Riordan covered in gold surrounded also with children in gold. Other clips sees children playing war games and featured British soldiers on patrol in Northern Ireland, which was controversial.

The track won the "Best Song" award at the 1995 MTV Europe Music Awards and as of April 2017, the video has over 510 million views on YouTube. Footage of the soldiers was banned from being shown in the UK and the video below is the unbanned version.
