Loading the Jukebox 14 - Friday Night, Saturday Morning - The Specials

What a cool tune and one of my favourites, I just love it. The mellow voice of lead singer Terry Hall is hypnotizing and the lyrics are sublime written my Hall himself. It was released on the B-side of the smash hit single "Ghost Town" and also on the B-side was “Why”. I remember buying both the 7” single and the 12” single.

“Ghost Town” the theme of the song was urban decay, deindustrialisation, unemployment and violence in inner cities, the song is remembered for being a hit at the same time as riots were occurring in British cities.

“Why” was a plea for racial tolerance and was written by guitarist Lynval Golding in response to a violent racist attack he had suffered in July 1980 outside the Moonlight Club in West Hampstead in London, which had left him hospitalised with broken ribs.

Lead singer Terry Hall wrote “Friday Night, Saturday Morning”. The song described a mundane night out in Coventry he could be describing a Friday Night of me staggering home on a Saturday morning in Cardiff.

I would put all three in any jukebox of mine
