Must see TV - Week beginning Sat 20 October 2018

Another quiet week coming up but on the upside I am looking forward to the return of ‘Alaska: The Last Frontier’ I am fascinated with shows about people living off grid. The only disappointment with the show they were not really living off grid living within easy access of the modern world. Something else I am looking forward to the commercial fishermen of ‘Wicked Tuna: North and South’ who work the Outer Banks and another returning favourite on Thursday.

Saturday – BBC4 - 54 Hours: The Gladback Hostage Crisis 9pm (New Series)

On a swelteringly hot day in August 1988, armed masked robbers take two hostages at the Gladbeck branch of the Deutsche Bank. It starts of a chain of events that goes on to transfix Germany. Throwing up big questions, about the role of the press in reporting unfolding crimes.

This two-part dramatization is tremendous and taut with anguish (you’ll be swept up in every one of the first episode’s 90 minutes) as police, who are hopelessly out of their depth, try their hardest to keep the hostages from harm while reporters crowd the crime scene.

But the captors become increasingly panicky and unstable, and the ripples of what starts as a botched bank robbery in a small town become waves that spread across the country. The fear and horror escalate as police do little but flounder in incompetence.
